NOAA to Conduct Geodetic Observations of the Washington Monument

Beginning around March 1, weather and other conditions permitting, the National Geodetic Survey will aid the National Park Service (NPS) by conducting geodetic leveling observations of the Washington Monument. The survey effort will help evaluate whether any displacement resulted from the August 23, 2011, earthquake. The various geophysical and engineering firms conducting examinations for the NPS have indicated these data would be of immense value to their efforts. The survey plans are being expanded to include observations around the tidal basin to the Jefferson Memorial and Lincoln Memorial, as well as other areas along the National Mall, including the Smithsonian Institution's Castle building, the U.S. Capitol, and eastward to Union Station.
