NGS Pilot Project Will Assist FEMA with Floodplain Mapping

As the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) moves closer to replacing the North American Datum of 1983 and the North American Vertical Datum of 1988, it will interact closely with agencies that use the datums to assist them with the transition. Much of the interaction with agencies will be via NGS pilot projects. The first such pilot project will be with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and will be conducted in North Carolina, with the cooperation of the North Carolina Geodetic Survey. This pilot project is scheduled to last one year, with the goal being to produce a new set of instructions for FEMA floodplain mapping based on access to the new datums and their definitions.
