March 13, 2004
On March 13, 2004, NOAA's National Geodetic Survey dedicated the commemorative geodetic marker at the three flags ceremony in front of the Missouri History Museum in St. Louis, Missouri. The event was hosted by the Missouri Historical Society, and the Master of Ceremonies was Dr. Robert Archibald, President and CEO of the Missouri Historical Society in St. Louis. Dr. Archibald also serves as President of the National Council of the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial. NGS Chief Geodesist Dave Doyle was on hand and spoke for NGS at the dedication. Dave also gave a presentation in the Tent of Many Voices that day about the long history of NGS.
Also speaking at the dedication was Dan Lashley, PLS, from the Department of Natural Resources in Missouri. Dan was dressed in period clothing for the event and gave a brief but riveting talk on how the Corps of Discovery used the sextant to keep track of their location as they crossed the new frontier.
Also speaking was Chris Ferguson, President of the St. Louis Chapter of the Missouri Society of Professional Surveyors (MSPS). Special thanks goes out to the MSPS for their effort in setting the monument, and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources for positioning it with GPS, tying to the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS).
