On May 22, 2004, NOAA's National Geodetic Survey dedicated the commemorative
geodetic marker at the National Signature Event "PREPARATIONS
COMPLETE - THE EXPEDITION FACES WEST" ceremony in front of the
Lewis and Clark Boathouse and Nature Center in St. Charles, Missouri.
Master of Ceremonies was Stephen Randall, the NOAA Lewis and Clark project
manager. NGS Chief Geodesist Dave Doyle was on hand and spoke for NGS
at the dedication. Also speaking at the dedication was Dan Lashley, PLS,
from the Department of Natural Resources in Missouri. Dan was dressed
in period clothing for the event and gave a brief but riveting talk on
how the Corps of Discovery used the sextant to keep track of their location
as they crossed the new frontier. Also speaking was Chris Ferguson, President
of the St. Louis Chapter of the Missouri Society of Professional Surveyors
(MSPS).
Special thanks goes out to the MSPS for their effort
in setting the monument, and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources
for positioning it with GPS, tying to the National Spatial Reference
System (NSRS).
