June 26, 2004
On June 26, 2004, NOAA's National Geodetic Survey dedicated the geodetic commemorative marker at Kaw Point, Kansas.
The Lewis and Clark Expedition arrived at Kaw Point on June 26, 1804. Kaw Point is where the Kansas River runs into the Missouri River. Due to changes in the rivers locations, in 1804 Kaw Point was about 1/4 mile up the Missouri River from its current location. Lewis and Clark halted at the mouth of the Kansas River for three days. Kansas State Geodetic Advisor Monroe Rivers had the marker set in the ground and the dedication logistics in place. NGS Lewis and Clark project manager Steve Randall was in town and gave the dedication speech for NGS.
On Friday, June 25, the dedication of the new Lewis and Clark Historic Park at Kaw Point took place at the pavilion where the commemorative marker is located. On hand for the ceremonies were Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius, who spoke for the state of Kansas, Kansas City Mayor Carol Marinovich, Representative Dennis Moore, 3rd District and Dan Jack, Kaw Nation of Oklahoma. The ceremony ended with a tribal prayer and a brass cannon salute.
