On September 24, 2004 during a beautiful fall afternoon in central South Dakota, the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) and the South Dakota Society of Professional Land Surveyors (SDSPLS) dedicated the brass Corps of Discovery II disk and accompanying bronze plaque. In addition to serving as a monument commemorating the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition, this disk is also a HARN point which is part of the National Spatial Reference System.

Steve Randall of Silver Spring, MD addressed the group on behalf of the NGS at this dedication. Len Neugebauer spoke on behalf of the SDSPLS, which was represented by several SDSPLS board members who were present for the dedication. Tom Week was present representing the South Dakota Department of Transportation. Doug Nelson, Mayor of Chamberlain, and Mike Schreiber, Vice President of the Oacoma Town Board, spoke on behalf of their communities.

NGS and SDSPLS are greatly appreciative of the assistance provided by Heidi Nogy with the Chamberlain Chamber of Commerce as well as the staff of the Chamberlain rest area. We are also deeply indebted to the efforts of personnel with the South Dakota Department of Transportation who installed the disk and plaque as well as performed the GPS survey of the disk for establishing its geodetic position.
