On October 23, 2004 NOAA's National Geodetic Survey,
along with the North Dakota Society of Professional Land Surveyors,
held a Corps of Discovery II Commemorative Marker dedication at Fort
Abraham Lincoln State Park, just southwest of Bismarck, North Dakota.
The monument is the result of teamwork between Fort Abraham Lincoln
State Park, North Dakota Parks and Recreation, The North Dakota Society
of Professional Land Surveyors and The National Geodetic
Survey. North Dakota Lt. Governor Jack Dalyrmple spoke at the dedication
along with the Mayor of Bismarck, John Warford, and the Mayor of Mandan,
Ken Lamont. Speaking on behalf of the National Park Service was Lewis
and Clark historic trail superintendent Steve Adams. Dave Doyle from
the National Geodetic Survey spoke on behalf of NOAA.
Robb Nurre from the Bureau of Land Management portrayed surveyor
John Herald at the monument's dedication. Herald was one of the first
surveyors to mark out the land in this area after Lewis and Clark.
Later in the day, at the University of Mary in Bismarck, Dave Doyle,
from NGS, gave a presentation in the Tent of Many voices on the history
of the National Geodetic Survey .
Special thanks goes out to the North Dakota Society of Professional
Surveyors for their work in the construction of this beautiful monument,
and also for the buffalo burger barbeque after the ceremony, which
was well attended by many surveyors and their families.
