On May 24, the city of Washington Missouri dedicated
a commemorative geodetic survey marker on the banks of the Missouri
River at Riverfront Park.
The dedication took place shortly after the keel
boat arrived from St. Charles and the Corps II Expedition arrived in
period costume. Also on hand were the Lewis and Clark Fife & Drum
Corps who paraded through town on their way to the dedication site.
Dorris Keeven-Franke, the Washington Bicentennial
Chairperson introduced Mayor Dick Stratman who welcomed and introduced
the speakers at the ceremony.
J. Michael Flowers, State land Surveyor for Missouri,
spoke on behalf of the history of surveying in Missouri and its beginnings
with the Lewis and Clark expedition. Steve Randall, NOAA Lewis and Clark
project manager, spoke on behalf of the National Geodetic Survey and
its roots that go back to Thomas Jefferson. Dan Lashley, Missouri Dept.
of Natural Resources gave a riveting lecture on how Lewis and Clark
navigated their way across the uncharted territory with just the few
survey instruments they carried with them.
Special thanks goes out to Buesher Frankenburg Associates,
Inc. for their support in making this event happen by supplying the
logistics and manpower in the tradition of the Corps of Discovery 200
years later.
