Height Modernization

Alaska Region

Alaska Alaska Regional U.S. Map

Large sections of the Arctic and Alaska are void of data and fundamental geospatial infrastructure, which is available to the rest of the nation.  The Arctic also presents unique challenges and extremes in weather and temperature that require NOAA to adapt critical geospatial infrastructure to operate in these conditions.

For this reason, NOAA is presently conducting gravity collection and modeling efforts necessary to significantly improve the vertical reference system and elevation/height information in the region during the summer months and planning in the winter months.  NOAA is also working to expand coverage from the Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) Network and National Water Level Observation Network (NWLON).
