Ecosystem and Climate Operations

Long-term Monitoring and Research Support at Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC)

Site:

Annapolis, MD

Purpose(s):

(1) Long-term monitoring of land elevation and water level changes in a delicate coastal ecosystem
(2) Provide vertical control for multiple research projects

Summary:

NGS has established high accuracy vertical control networks at many sites around the nation to support coastal restoration, research, testing of new geodetic technologies, and monitoring of the effects of local relative sea level rise. At SERC, NGS is working with researchers to bring a local geodetic network to the water's edge. A deep rod mark has been installed and will become part of a high accuracy local geospatial network. SERC explores many research questions regarding how climate change impacts effect marsh vegetation, and a high accuracy vertical control network will support the long term monitoring completed at the site.
