NGS Reaches Out to Educate and Inform Budding Scientists on Coast-Related Programs

This week, NOAA's National Geodetic Survey (NGS) and Office of Coast Survey (OCS) participated in Know the Coast Day, an educational open house for K-12 students and the general public at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) Joint Hydrographic Center Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping. Sponsored by the UNH Marine Program, the New Hampshire Sea Grant College Program, and the UNH Marine Docents, Know the Coast Day includes a diverse array of educational hands-on activities highlighting coastal research. Activities at the event, geared specifically for K-12 students, provide an opportunity for students to interact with scientists and educators and tour labs and research vessels. NGS presented an interactive coastal remote sensing demonstration, illustrating technologies used by NGS for mapping the coast, including Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) and aerial imagery.
