NGS Heritage Assets Requested by the Smithsonian Institution for New Exhibit on Time and Navigation

The Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum has contacted the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) regarding the loan of an early model GPS system for inclusion in a new Smithsonian Timing and Navigation exhibit in Washington, D.C. The exhibit is expected to be on display to the public for ten years. The requested equipment includes a GPS receiver with tape drive, antenna, and controller. NGS used this GPS system in the late 1980's to collect raw field data as part of its National Spatial Reference System surveys. This instrument, now obsolete, is currently part of a heritage asset display at NOAA headquarters in Silver Spring. For more information, contact Dennis Hoar.
