The overall goal is to establish 2 cm or better accuracy on the Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) to not only support the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) improvement projects but also provide the necessary engineering control and the accurate elevation data that they require for the rapidly growing Land Information Systems (LIS) and the Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

The near term objective is to establish orthometric heights on all of the CORS locations in New Jersey. This will provide better vertical control and allow the users to utilize the CORS to provide very accurate horizontal and vertical control in real time, rather than having to perform post processing functions.

Accomplishments

This project is to establish orthometric elevations on the CORS in New Jersey. It will include the installation of three reference marks at each of the CORS locations no more than 1 KM from the Antenna Reference Point. First Order leveling will be employed to establish the elevations at each of the reference marks. The elevations will then be transferred to the CORS. All of the data will be collected, downloaded and processed in accordance with NGS procedures and submitted to them for approval and inclusion into the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS).

Regional Activities

New Jersey is part of the North Atlantic Region. The updated CORS network in New Jersey with The overall network will not only benefit the NJDOT, but other state and federal agencies in performing their surveying, engineering, and mapping projects. The other benefitting agencies include New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), NJDEP Bureau of Geospatial Information Systems, Federal Highway Administration, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Ocean Service, National Geodetic Survey, and United States Army Corps of Engineers
