Height Modernization in Indiana, lead by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), will be implemented in conjunction with the INDOT Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) network. The effort will allow the vertical component or elevation of the state reference frame to be more accurate; thus, the vertical accuracy will be in-line with the accuracy of the horizontal component provided to users of the CORS system.

Accomplishments

The INDOT CORS network (InCORS) has 45 primary stations, seven of which are planned to become part of the National CORS network. InCORS supports a statewide real time network that became operational in early 2010. The next phases of Height Modernization in Indiana include differential leveling to all INDOT CORS and to strategic High Accuracy Reference Network (HARN) stations. After leveling is complete, existing bench marks will be inventoried and evaluated, then Global Positioning System (GPS) observations will be completed on strategic First and Second Order bench marks. A subsequent expansion of Height Modernization could establish up to 200 new three-dimensional control points where existing control is inadequate.

Regional Activities

Indiana participates in the Great Lakes Region Height Modernization Consortium. Partners within the state include the Indiana Society of Professional Land Surveyors, the Indiana Geographic Information Council and the State Geodetic Coordinator.
