Georgia can benefit from Height Modernization because accurate heights support critical infrastructure including transportation systems, airplane runways and water delivery systems. Additionally, Georgia is vulnerable to hazards such as hurricanes and changing sea levels that will place some areas at risk from coastal storm surge and flooding. Height Modernization will support emergency management planning, land use planning and management, and elevation change monitoring to help address these additional challenges.
NGS has worked closely with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to maximize use of vertical control and the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS) for expansion/dredging projects similar to the effort in Savannah. Using tide gauges and accurate vertical geodetic control tied to the NSRS prevents having to dredge more than necessary to achieve a required depth. This in turn, reduces project cost.
