Shoreline Auto-extraction

Auto-extraction of Shoreline Features

Researchers are looking at the auto-extraction of shoreline features using an object-based image analysis approach at NGS. Work is currently in progress on two project areas: the outer coast and sounds of North Carolina and the Louisiana, MS delta region.

Segmentation using Envi's Feature Extraction tool and IR ortho-imagery has yielded promising results. Due to certain issues, including terrain displacement, researchers are evaluating the types of shoreline that may lend themselves to auto-feature extraction. Based on preliminary findings, it appears that segmentation is most effective at the land/water interface in areas of low tide range and wave run-up.
