Wavelets have drawn much attention during the last few years. Applications relevant to digital photogrammetry can be found in image restoration, image compression, feature extraction and texture analysis among others. this paper gives an introduction into wavelet analysis. Basic mathematics such as the continuous and the discrete wavelet transform, and the multi-resolution analysis are reviewed. The Haar wavelet is the simplest wavelet, and it lends itself to the explanation and illustration of the concept of wavelet analysis. therefore, it is used in an example involving edge detection from synthetic and real images.
