Wetlands Restoration: Barren Island

The National Geodetic Survey (NGS) is partnering with the Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS) and the Office of Response and Restoration (ORR) in various marsh restoration projects. The goal is to develop a suite of tools for improving the long term success of coastal habitat restoration projects, to develop into healthy, stable ecosystems, and prevent harm to adjacent developed property.

Survey activities at Barren island were designed to measure the effect of geotextile tubes on shoreline stabilization. In December 2001, five deep-rod bench marks were set and positioned with differential leveling and two GPS sessions. The crew returned in May 2002 to survey the beach using Real-Time Kinematic GPS.
