Wetlands Restoration: Poplar Point Marsh |

Water
levels are a fundamental component of marsh ecosystems. At the Poplar Point
marsh on Washington D.C.'s Anacostia river, geodetic survey methods were
employed to compare the marsh surface elevation to local sea level models.
This project provided NOAA scientists with practical experience in acquiring
and utilizing high accuracy elevation data in a marsh restoration project.
The field work began with a differential leveling survey to transfer
historic tidal elevations from nearby tidal bench marks located at the
Washington Navy Yard. To save time and maximize accuracy, a creative short-cut
was found under the river via the Anacostia subway tunnel. A static GPS
survey added accuate horizontal positions and ellipsoid heights to the
new bench marks, and provided control for a kinematic survey of monitoring
wells and the marsh surface.
