March 15, 2004
On March 15, 2004, the United States Mint at Denver was honored with a historic marker for its production of the Nation's first new nickel in 66 years.
Timothy Keeney, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Oceans and Atmosphere, and Steve Deitemeyer of the Lewis and Clark Heritage Foundation joined Director Fore at the United States Mint at Denver to celebrate the placement of the "Corps of Discovery II" geodetic marker.
"The National Geodetic Survey, now a part of NOAA, was commissioned by Thomas Jefferson and began its proud history with Lewis and Clark's Westward Journey", Keeney said. "It is a fitting tribute to the expedition and the great agency that we dedicate this marker today as the United States Mint also unveils its newest commemorative coin."
