Interesting features to note about this image are: The Rocky/Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range stands out nicely in orange/red, showing both their height and their high-frequency nature. Less clearly delineated, but still obvious are the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains on the East coast of Mexico, seen as yellow/orange (and red around Mexico City). Significant portions of Eastern United States, the Yucatan Peninsula, most of West Cuba and the Bahamas are low elevation areas and show up as a light/deep blue. These areas are just above sea level in elevation. As such, while it looks like these areas are under water, they are merely shaded a very deep blue because of the color scale. The completely mountainous terrain of Honduras is obvious, and is closely correlated with the geoid high over that country. Negative elevations (land areas that are below sea level) are found in the Salton Sea and Death Valley areas of South and Southeast California. das/dgm 4/14/97
