Interesting features to note about this image are: The highly rugged terrain of Honduras and Nicaragua are nicely detailed, showing how few lowlands are in this part of Central America. The Colombian/Venezuelan mountain ranges of Sierra del Perija and Cordillera de Merida (lower central portion of the image) stand out as they surround Lake Maracaibo. Their steepness can been seen by the general lack of foothills as the elevations rise from the zero elevation of Lake Maracaibo to their highest peaks, over 14,000 feet high. The Orinoco River valley, encompassing much of central Venezuela is seen as a very flat area, with the Cordillera de Merida far to the west, and the Serrania de Imataca and Serrania Turagua ranges to the south (Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world, is found in the southern range of Serrania Turagua, just outside the range of this image). The various islands of the Caribbean have a rich diversity of terrain heights and ruggedness. The Bahamas, for instance are extremely low and flat, which contrasts starkly with the rugged mountains of the Dominican Republic, which reach over 10,000 feet high. das/hjs 7/9/1997
