Some interesting features to note about this image are: The long E/W purple feature, north of the islands, is the gravitational signal induced by the Puerto Rico trench. This trench is the location where the North American plate transitions past (and, further to the east, subducts beneath) the Caribbean plate. The Puerto Rico trench is one of the deepest trenches in the Atlantic Ocean, reaching depths in excess of 28,000 feet, thus causing significant effects to the geoid in the area. das/dgm 10/18/96
