Annex C - Contributors of Geodetic Control Data

1.0 Overview

This annex contains a list of organizations which have contributed (or are expected to contribute) data resulting from geodetic control established to extend and/or densify the national horizontal and vertical geodetic control networks.

A unique six-character identification symbol has been assigned to each organization listed. As far as possible, this symbol is identical to the commonly used abbreviation or acronym of the respective organization. However, to ensure uniqueness, modifications of the commonly used abbreviations and acronyms, as well as arbitrary symbols, had to be assigned in many cases. Organizations not listed in this annex may contact Burt Smith at the National Geodetic Survey to have a unique identification symbol assigned.

The respective organizations are grouped under 13 categories, and within each category they are listed in the alphabetic order of their identification symbols. The 13 categories are given in the index below.

3.0 Conventions Used in the Formation of Identification Symbols

a. State, Province, Commonwealth, and Territorial Agencies: The six-character identification symbol of a state, province, commonwealth, or territorial agency consists of the respective two-character state code (see Annex A) to which up to four letters (e.g. the initials of the agency's name) may be appended. In general, "S" for "state" and "0" for "of" should be omitted.

b. County Agencies: The six-character identification symbol of a county agency consists of the two-character code denoting the state in which the county is located (see Annex A) followed by a hyphen and by a three-digit number which has been assigned to the respective county in Worldwide Geographic Location Codes prepared by the Office of Finance, General Services Administration (GSA), September 1987. Agencies which do not have access to this publication may contact Burt Smith at the National Geodetic Survey to obtain the appropriate county code.

c. City Agencies: The six-character identification symbol of a city agency consists of the two-character code denoting the state in which the city is located (see Annex A) followed by a four-digit number which has been assigned to the respective city in Worldwide Geographic Location Codes prepared by the Office of Finance, General Services Administration (GSA), September 1987. Agencies which do not have access to this publication may contact Burt Smith at the National Geodetic Survey to obtain the appropriate city code.

NOTE: For the purposes of this annex, agencies of independent cities which are also counties or county-equivalents should be considered to be city (rather than county) agencies and assigned identification symbols accordingly.

4.0 Get the Latest Contributors List

NGS keeps track of who submits (contributes) descriptions to NGS for processing and loading into the NGS database (NGSIDB). You can view the list of contributors in the RECOVERY online program format or, generate the list of contributors in the WDDPROC software suite format.

4.1 RECOVERY Online Program Format

In the RECOVERY online program format each line or record of the contributors list consists of 4 fields:

Field Number Field Name Length Column Range of Values
1 agency code (symbol) 6 001-006 Each character must fall within the range [A..Z, 0..9, +, -].
2 filler 3 007-009 Each character must fall within the range [space].
3 agency fullname/definition 80 010-089 Each character must fall within the range [A..Z, 0..9, +, -].
4 end of line character 1 090-090 [\n].

The sort order for the viewable contributors list is by agency (symbol) code.

Please note that if the agency code from the NGSIDB is less than six characters in length, it is padded with blanks. Likewise, if the agency fullname/definition is less than 80 characters in length, it is padded with blanks.

4.2 WDDPROC Software Suite Format

In the WDDPROC Software Suite Format each line or record of the contributors list consists of 4 fields:

Field Number Field Name Length Column Range of Values
1 agency category 1 001-001 Values found in ANNEX C, Categories of Contributors of Geodetic Data.
2 agency code (symbol) 6 002-007 Each character must fall within the range [A..Z, 0..9, +, -].
3 agency fullname/definition 80 007-086 Each character must fall within the range [A..Z, 0..9, +, -].
4 end of line character 1 087-087 [\n].

The sort order for the viewable contributors list is by agency (symbol) code.

Please note that if the agency code from the NGSIDB is less than six characters in length, it is padded with blanks. Likewise, if the agency fullname/definition is less than 80 characters in length, it is padded with blanks.

4.3 Instructions for Creating a COUNTRIB.DAT File for the WDDPROC Software Suite

If you wish to generate an updated contrib.dat file for use in the WDDPROC Software Suite, simply follow the instructions below. The contrib.dat file is used by the WDESC program (a program within the WDDPROC Software Suite).

Step Instruction
1 Select Get the Latest Contributors List from the Annex C home page.
2 Click on the word generate in the right frame to generate the latest contributors list from the NGSIDB by WDDPROC software suite format.
3 Click on the right frame where the generated contributors list is displayed.
4 If you are using Internet Explorer (IE): (a) Right-mouse click in the right frame and choose Select All from the pop-up menu. (b) Choose Copy from the Edit menu. (c) Click on the Microsoft [START] button and then select the menupath Programs.., Accessories..., Notepad. (d) On the Notepad menu select the menupath Edit, Paste to bring the data into the current window. (e) In the Save in field select the directory of the WDDPROC.EXE program (e.g. generally located at C:\WDDPROC). (f) Press the [Save] button. The contrib.dat file is now updated in the WDDPROC Software Suite.

If you are using Netscape: (a) From the Netscape File menu select the menu option Save As.... (b) Enter contrib.dat into the File name field. (c) In the Save in field select the directory of the WDDPROC.exe program (i.e. generally located at C:\WDDPROC). (d) Press the [Save] button. The contrib.dat file will be updated in the WDDPROC Software Suite.
5 On your PC (a) select the [START] button (b) select Programs..., (c) select Accessories..., then (d) select Notepad. (e) Edit out all the HTML at the top and the bottom of the document (i.e. the stuff between and including the "<" and ">" characters). (f) Save the file again as contrib.dat.
6 Place the contrib.dat file on your PC in the same directory as the WDESC program.
7 Run the WDESC program. The fields that are affected by the contrib.dat file are (1) the Reporting By field on the Project Header Form, and (2) the Established By, Logo, and Report By fields on the Description Header Form.
8 If you are having problems with the WDESC program recognizing the changed contrib.dat file, you will need to get into the Microsoft Registry. To do this (a) on your PC press the [START] button. (b) Select Run... from the menu. (c) When the Run window comes up, enter regedit into the Open field and press the [OK] button. (d) In the Registry Edit window double-click on the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder, followed by the Software folder, followed by the National Geodetic Survey folder, and finally the WDesc folder. In the right frame of the Registry Editor window, is a list of Name/Data pairs. The contrib.dat_location name's data field should be something like "C:\WDDPROC\contrib.dat". See step 6.
